Scanner manufacturer's have very little incentive to upgrade their drivers when operating system's are upgraded. They do not make money off of their scanners after the initial purchase. So many manufacturers have went on to develope products that are a scanner/printer/copier all in one. By doing this they can make money off of you after the sale, when you go to buy ink. But a plain scanner, while usually much better in scan quality, does not have that type of a consumable.

With the unvieling of Windows XP and OSX, many scanners were rendered useless. And scanner manufactures made a decision to no longer support their old scanners and force you to purchase a new scanner, even though the one you currently own worked great on earlier versions.
