The Image tab lets you control the outcome and quality of a scanned image.

Add Highlight:

This scroll bar lets you adjust the brightest areas of the image. The smaller the highlight value (moving the slider to the left), then the darker the highlight area of the image becomes. By default, the highlight is set to the brightest level.

Add Shadow:

This scroll bar lets you adjust the darkest areas of the image. The greater the shadow value (moving the slider to the right), the lighter the shadow area of the image becomes. By default, the shadow is set to the darkest level.

Use Custom Gamma:

By default, Art-Copy applies different gamma values (middle points) to adjust an image for different output destinations. For example, the gamma for Copy and the gamma for Fax are different than the gamma for E-mail. If, for any reason, you don’t like the outcome of the adjustment, you can set the Gamma scroll bar to the value you desire. After this option is set, all future images are adjusted by this gamma value, no matter the output destination.

Gamma Correction:

This scroll bar lets you adjust the middle point of the image. It lightens or darkens the image without affecting the brightest or darkest area, so the image appears sharper but still maintains its color range.

B/W Threshold:

This slider lets you scan a grayscale image instead of a 1-bit black and white image. It will control how bright or dark the 1-bit black and white image will be after the conversion. If the image appears too dark, you can brighten the image by moving the scroll bar to the left. If the overall image is too bright, you will move the scroll bar to the right.

Descreen:

When scanning in images or documents such as newspaper articles, or magazines. An optical pattern will occur on the scanned image called a Moire patter. In order to deal with these Moire patterns Art-Copy SE has a built in function to deal with these patterns, simply by specifying the material you're working with. Simply choose from the listing anything from "newspaper 65-110LPI" to "Lithograph 200LPI", and then Art-Copy SE's descreening function will apply a slight blur to the scanned document that effectively eliminates the Moire pattern. It is best advised that after you apply the descreen function to the image that you also apply a sharpening affect after a scan.

Rotate Image:

With this drop down list you have the choice to rotate the image after it has been scanned to 90, 180, or even 270 degrees in a clock-wise motion.

Do Sharpening After Scan:

During the normal course of a scanning job the image or document may appear somewhat blurred, either due to the quality of the document being scanned, or due to the options being applied. To remedy this blurred effect, you can simply click 'Do sharpening After Scan', set the percentages to be applied to each aspect of the blur, and Art-Copy SE will sharpen the image after the initial scan.

Invert Image:

This option inverts the image after a scan, that is black to white and white to black (similar to a photographic negative). It also applies to gray and color images, making them look like negative images.

Despeckle B/W Image:

Despeckle will compare the radius around a small grouping of pixels known as “specks”. After comparing the speck with the area around its location on the image Art-Copy will calculate the relevancy of the pixel. Based on the results of the pixel calculation Art-Copy Scripting will remove the “speck” from the image. This is extremely useful when scanning grainy documents with the OCR feature since removing these unnecessary blemishes will increase the quality of the created OCR document.

Deskew Image:

Art-Copy’s advanced Deskew feature will compare the angle of the text of a scanned document, then based upon the degree of the results will rotate the image contents to accommodate for this slant so that the image will be perfectly flush. This means that if you have a document that has been poorly placed on a scanner then scanned, or a printed copy of a document from an office copier. Simply take this document, scan it using Art-Copy with the Deskew feature enabled, and Art-Copy will auto rotate the image to the perfect degree without causing any changes to the original size of the image.

Scan True B/W Image:

When scanning in the B/W or Text (OCR) color mode, the material is initially scanned in grayscale. This enables you to set threshold levels to adjust brightness. The trade-off is the slower scan speed. By setting this option, Art-Copy scans the material only in true black and white (that is 1-bit per pixel), so it increases the scan speed and saves the memory substantially. You can no longer adjust the brightness through B/W Threshold. This will disable most of the other features on this tab.

JPG/TIF/PDF Quality:

This option allows you to change the quality that the JPEG, TIFF, and PDF images will be saved at when created. Depending on the quality or the amount of memory you wish to save you can choose from low to lossless.
