Art-Copy's Advanced Functions:
Custom Scanner Buttons (hardware)

[Return to Contents]

Many users when performing scans of any kind prefer to use the simple scan buttons provided on the scanner itself. By clicking the hardware buttons their scanners are preprogrammed to carry out the scan settings set by the manufacturers software. Art-Copy will now support being used directly by hardware scanning buttons with WIA compatible scanners on Windows XP only.

To have Art-Copy carry out pre-set scanning options upon the launch of a hardware scanning button you will need to follow the instructions below:

NOTE: Upon opening Art-Copy by any means will result in Art-Copy performing the specified tasks. This means anytime either by using the scanner buttons or by clicking on the Art-Copy shortcut the Art-Copy will perform whatever action was set by the “Action to perform” drop down until the action is set to “None”.

1.) Open the Windows XP Control Panel then click on the "Scanners & Cameras" icon

2.) Right-click on the scanner and go to "Properties"

3.) Click on the "Events" tab at the top of the properties window

4.) Make the changes as shown below.

Select an event:

From the “Events” tab for the selected scanner you may choose the event associated with each scanner button to perform a certain action. Each button of the scanner is preset to perform a certain scan option either using the manufacturers software, or another program associated with the type of scanning job being performed. For convenience locate the scanner button on the scanner that you wish to associate with Art-Copy, and then locate the event for that particular scanner button within the drop down listing.

Start this program:

If you want to assign a program to automatically accept the “Scan to application” button function so that you will not need to specify what program to send the created files to each time. Set the default application by scrolling the listing of applications, select the program you wish to use, and select either the default application setting “Image (Single Page)”, “Image (Multiple Page)”, or “Text (OCR)”. Once you’ve decided what the default application type will be you simply need to click the “Always send to default application” button located on the bottom of the Application tab. If you do not select the “Always send to default application” option you will be prompted with the dialog window below upon each use of the “Scan to Application” button from the main interface.

5.) Open Art-Copy

6.) Click "File->Setup" then click on the "Auto Scan" tab

Action to perform:

By specifying to open Art-Copy using the hardware buttons provided on the scanner. Art-Copy will open directly bypassing the manufacturers software altogether. Once Art-Copy opens the program will perform the exact action that is specified in the “Actions to perform” drop down listing. This action will be performed each and every time Art-Copy opens regardless of whether activated by the scan buttons located on the scanner, or by clicking to open the Art-Copy shortcut.
