Art-Copy's Advanced Functions:
Batch Scanning

[Return to Contents]

Art-Copy, unlike many other programs, makes batch scanning as simple as it should be. In order to perform a batch scan with Art-Copy several options need to be enabled before batch scanning can be performed. Each option enabled will be based on the particular scanner that you will be using during the scanning process. What this means is that performing a batch scan with a standard flatbed scanner will differ from performing a batch scan with an automatic document feeder (ADF).

To go about setting up Art-Copy to support batch scanning you will need to first open Art-Copy, then go to the "File menu" and select “Setup”. This will display the setup window shown below from which you can choose a particular setup tab that will display each unique Art-Copy scanning option available to the program.

From this setup window you will need to click the Scan tab in order to display the scan operations settings for Art-Copy. This is where we will enable support for batch scanning documents with Art-Copy. Before we can do this though you will first need to inspect your scanning hardware to determine what options are best for you.

To batch scan with a standard flatbed scanner:

By default once a flatbed scans the scanner bed it finalizes the scan job creating a single image per each scan job. For batch scanning multiple documents into a single multiple page PDF or Tiff file this can make for an almost impossible scan job. Art-Copy was created so that anyone could create a batch scan regardless of the type of hardware the user will be working with. In order to batch scan with a flatbed scanner the following options will need to be set from the “Scan” tab:

“Save multiple images into one image file [Tiff, PDF]” – This option will allow each document scanned as part of the batch scan to be saved into a single multiple page files in either PDF or Tiff format. If this option is not selected Art-Copy will save each document as its own individual file.

“Enable batch scan” – This option will specify to Art-Copy that each document scanned will be part of a session of image scans. You will be prompted to enter the total number of batch scans that Art-Copy should perform. For flatbed scanners since each scan is treated as a completed scan job you will need to specify the number of documents that will be scanned in this particular batch scan.

“Ask me whether to scan additional batches, which will be appended onto the previous ones” – Being prompted at the end of a completed batch scan whether you should scan another batch scan is perfect for flatbed batch scan jobs. If for some reason your original count of documents was off during the initial number entered from the “Enable batch scan” prompting. This option will prompt you at the end of each completed batch scan whether you would like to scan another batch scan job, or if you would like to finalize the batch scan.

To batch scan with an automatic document feeder (ADF):

“Save multiple images into one image file [Tiff, PDF]” – This option will allow each document scanned as part of the batch scan to be saved into a single multiple page files in either PDF or Tiff format. If this option is not selected Art-Copy will save each document as its own individual file.

“Scan from Automatic Document Feeder (ADF)” – For scanners that have an ADF attached you may already be familiar with the ability of the ADF to batch scan documents at high rates of speed. By enabling the ‘Scan from ADF’ option of Art-Copy, Art-Copy will bypass the flatbed to scan specifically with the attached ADF.

“Enable batch scan” – Unlike the enable batch scan for using the flatbed scanners. By scanning with an ADF Art-Copy will treat every document contained in the ADF hopper as one batch scanning. Meaning if you have an ADF with 20 documents Art-Copy will scan each document and all 20 scans will be treated as one successful batch scan.

“Ask me whether to scan additional batches, which will be appended onto the previous ones” – If like many other scanners with an ADF, should the hopper holding the documents to run through the ADF become too full, and there still should be more documents to scan into the single batch scan. By enabling this option you will be prompted after the first successful batch scan whether you would like to scan another batch each time a batch scan is completed. If you’re attempting to scan 100 documents and you’re only able to scan 10 documents at a time by using this option 10 more times you’ll be able to create a multiple page PDF or Tiff file containing all 100 documents from a single batch scan process.
